Every year, the Grace Blue team take a moment to recognise some of the incredible women who have inspired us over the last 12 months. In celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day, we pay tribute to all the brilliant female leaders, trailblazers, athletes and public figures around the world who have inspired or moved us. We have shared only a few of those women today (as there are many) who we admire for their strength, courage, compassion and remarkable achievements.
Gisèle Pelicot: She has shown extraordinary courage and resilience in the face of unimaginable trauma. Despite her horrific ordeal, Gisèle chose to waive her right to anonymity during the trial, ensuring that the perpetrators faced public scrutiny. Her bravery has galvanized international support, challenging societal norms around rape culture and inspiring countless survivors of sexual violence. By standing firm and refusing to be shamed, she has become a powerful symbol of female strength and a beacon for change, inspiring others to speak out against abuse and fight for justice.
Jodie Grinham (British archer): She became the first athlete ever to win a Paralympic medal while pregnant when she won an individual bronze medal on Saturday, before capping off her historic weekend with a team gold medal on Monday at the 2024 Paris Games.
Dame Maggie Smith (Actress): Her unparalleled talent, resilience will have a lasting impact on the world of theatre and film. With a career spanning over seven decades, she consistently delivered powerful, nuanced performances, proving that dedication and passion can lead to extraordinary longevity and success. Beyond her accolades, including multiple Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and Tonys, she remained humble and committed to her craft, inspiring generations of actors. Her ability to bring strength, wit, and depth to every role—while overcoming personal challenges, including a battle with cancer—makes her a true icon of perseverance and excellence.
Claudia Sheinbaum (President of Mexico): As the first woman elected as Mexico City’s mayor and now Mexico’s first female president, she has redefined what is possible for women in leadership. With a background in physics and climate science, she has championed progressive policies on sustainability, social equity, and public safety, demonstrating a deep commitment to improving lives. Her resilience, intelligence, and dedication to public service make her a role model for women and young leaders around the world.
Simone Biles (Athlete): She had to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health and then had an incredible come back in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games where she won 3 Gold and 1 Silver medal, which makes her tied for the second-most decorated female gymnast in Olympic history matching Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia. Simone’s story is an incredible showcase of mental tenacity and resilience and has highlighted and advocated for mental health support for athletes.
Sunita Williams (US Navy Officer & NASA Astronaut): A Cleveland native, this astonishing woman is a decorated US Navy officer, NASA astronaut, and one of the most experienced spacewalkers in the world. She’s been serving as part of an extended mission on the ISS for more than 8 months, after a technical issue delayed the safe return of the crew in June 2024. She’s an inspiring leader–demonstrating courage, drive, endurance, and positivity–and an extraordinary role model for us all.
Rev. Mariann Budde (Episcopal Bishop of Washington): As the first female bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, she has been a powerful voice for marginalised communities, advocating for racial equity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, immigration reform, and environmental stewardship. Her leadership has been marked by courageous stands against injustice, such as criticizing President Trump’s use of sacred symbols during protests and advocating for mercy towards transgender children and immigrants.
Ione Belarra (politician and psychologist): She has dedicated her career to advocating for human rights and social justice. Her commitment to addressing critical issues such as immigration, education, and animal welfare has been evident through her activism and legislative efforts. Notably, she introduced Spain’s first animal rights bill and has been vocal about international human rights issues, including the situation in Palestine.
Demi Moore (Actress): Her recent awards wins, including the Golden Globes and SAG Awards for her role in “The Substance,” highlight her perseverance and dedication to her craft. Despite being labelled a “popcorn actress” early in her career, Moore has overcome self-doubt and proven her talent, inspiring others to believe in themselves. Her award speeches emphasise the importance of human connection and self-worth, encouraging young actors not to lose sight of these values. At 62, Moore’s resurgence in the spotlight serves as a testament to her enduring talent and determination
